Diabetes India Oral Health Group (DIOH)

About DIOH

Diabetes India Oral Health Group (DIOH) is a speciality interest group (SIG) under the aegis of Diabetes India (DI), which is a leading organization of national & international repute for diabetes awareness, research, and implementation in clinical practice.

DIOH brings together diabetologists, endocrinologists, dentists, periodontists, public health experts, and physicians. Its primary focus is to highlight and address the complex bidirectional relationship between diabetes and oral health.

The Bidirectional Connection

People with diabetes are 2–3 times more likely to develop gum disease (periodontitis) and other dental infections. Conversely, untreated gum disease can worsen blood sugar control, making diabetes harder to manage and increasing the risk of diabetic complications.

India has approximately 60 million people with diabetes, with numbers rising each passing year. Oral diseases (like gum disease & dental caries) affect almost 60–85% of the population. The gaps in healthcare need to be addressed, as diabetes management requires oral and dental screening for evaluating the risk of prediabetes converting to diabetes, and controlled diabetes to uncontrolled diabetes. Currently, no formal referral systems exist between doctors and dentists, which clearly misses the opportunity for early detection and preventive care.

Goals of DIOH

  • Create Awareness Educate doctors, dentists, and the public about the diabetes–oral health connection.
  • Develop Guidelines Create standardized guidelines for integrated care for oral disease and diabetes.
  • Promote Collaboration Encourage cross-referrals between medical and dental professionals for holistic treatment.
  • Educate Patients Teach patients about oral hygiene as an essential part of diabetes self-care.
  • Policy Advocacy Advocate for policy change to integrate oral health into the national NCD (non-communicable disease) program.

Co-Management of Diseases

DIOH acts as a critical bridge between diabetology and dentistry. Considering the high prevalence of diabetes and poor oral health in India, management protocols need to be based on dual management—treating both the oral conditions & diabetes concurrently.

DIOH strives to make oral health an essential, routine part of diabetes care in India, enabling patients to live healthier and longer lives.
